Our journey into the world of Kalamkari led us to Pedana, near Machilipatnam, a place where every 6 out of 10 houses have Kalamkari equipment. This town is a hub of tradition and creativity, where artisans pour their heart and soul into every piece they create. Walking through Pedana, we observed the setup of Kalamkari production—from dyeing fabrics to intricate block printing and pen painting—a blend of traditional tools and techniques that have been passed down through generations. The town’s streets resonate with the rhythm of this art, showcasing the community’s deep connection to their craft.

During our visit, we interacted with local artisans and witnessed firsthand the immense effort and skill required to craft a single Kalamkari garment. Both block printing and pen Kalamkari techniques were on display, each showcasing unique aspects of this art form. For pen Kalamkari, an extraordinary process unfolds where 12 women sit around a saree, hand-painting intricate details from every direction. Completing one pen-painted saree takes approximately three days, while a dupatta takes two days with six women involved.

The Making of a Kalamkari Saree

The process of creating a Kalamkari saree is both labor-intensive and sustainable:

• Fabrics Used: Artisans work with cotton, Chanderi silk, and Banarasi fabrics, all prepared in-house. The white sarees are naturally dyed using fenugreek seeds/ horse gram, resulting in an off-white shade.
• Block Printing: Affordable Kalamkari sarees often feature block prints. After the initial print, the sarees are washed and reprinted for vibrant and durable designs. Cotton sarees typically undergo two cycles of printing and washing to ensure the colors remain intact.
• Pen Kalamkari: Done only on Chanderi silk and Banarasi silk sarees, pen Kalamkari involves painstakingly hand-painting intricate patterns. The use of organic, vegetable-based dyes ensures these sarees are eco-friendly, though they lack the artificial shine of powerloom sarees.
